Monetary committee welcomes Jean-Claude Trichet's acquittal

Brussels, 19/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - German Social Democrat Christa Randzio-Plath, chair of the EP's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, has welcomed Jean-Claude Trichet's acquittal in the Crédit Lyonnais case: "he is a remarkable person, and could be an excellent successor to Chairman Duisenberg" at the head of the European Central Bank, she said in a press release.

British Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne announced: "Mr Trichet can expect the support of the Liberal Group in the Parliament if nominated" as future ECB chairman. (It is worth noting that candidates for executive positions in the ECB are subject to public hearings before the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee).
