Brussels, 19/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday in Brussels, the European Parliament approved without debate the report by Luciano Caveri, outgoing president of the committee on regional policy and transport, supporting the Commission's proposal temporarily to relax the rules on allocating take-off and landing slots in European airports, to take into account difficulties airlines have encountered this year, both because of the war in Iraq and the outbreak of atypical pneumonia (see EUROPE of 18 June, p.15). Parliament is thus agreeing to the suspension, for the 2003 season, of the "use it or lose it" rule, which forces airlines to use at least 80% of their slots so as not to lose them the following season. The Transport Council of 6 June has already shown a favourable approach to this proposal.
