Brussels, 27/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - There will only be two items on the telecommunications part of the agenda of the Transport/Telecommunications/Energy Council, to be held in Luxembourg on 5 and 6 June. Apart from the conclusions on the World Summit on the Information Society (see EUROPE of 24 May, p.15), the Ministers are to conclude a "general guideline" (without the opinion of the Parliament, they will be unable to conclude a political agreement) on the proposed regulation instituting the European agency in charge of network and information security (see EUROPE of 11 February, p.10). It is worth noting that the agency's mission will be to serve as a centre of expertise, which Member States and the EU institutions will be able to turn to for advice on cybersecurity issues. The agency will also help Member States' authorities, such as their intervention teams, in case of an information emergency. Lastly, it will also contribute towards guaranteeing the interoperability of security functions in information networks and systems.
