27/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - After President Bush's attack on Europe's anti-GM "blockade", and the adoption of legislation on American assistance to the fight against Aids in Africa, Commissioner Lamy protested at a press conference: "using this dispute with the United States (on the level of adequate precaution for products containing genetically modified organisms: Ed) to claim that the Union is blocking food aid is unacceptable. Accusing the Union of allowing people of the Third World to starve because we are not stuffing them full of our surplus, that is quite clearly going way too far". He added that what the Americans are doing at the moment, "sending their surplus under the guise of food aid, is something we have not done for ten or fifteen years".
