Brussels, 27/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - The entry of Poland into the Euro Area, which the government presently forecasts for 2007, would seemingly be postponed by between one and three years, feels the chief economic adviser to the Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski. By showing realism, I believe that accession to the Euro zone will be possible in 2008-2010, stated Witold Orlowski in a speech given on Tuesday during an economic conference in Warsaw. Mr Orlowski notes that without a restructuring of industry, and a reform of public finances and the labour market, Poland seriously risks having to tolerate high 'adjustment costs' during the first years inside the Euro zone. He underlines that there should not be a technocratic approach to the problem, before explaining: we cannot say whether it will be sufficient, to join the Euro, to respect the budgetary and monetary criteria and that the remainder will adjust itself on its own. Analysts generally share the Presidential advisor's point of view, believing that he correctly reflects the difficulties that Warsaw will have in conforming within the given time with the accession criteria defined in Maastricht, notably due to the size of Poland's budgetary deficit.
