Brussels, 28/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - Member States will soon be encouraged to have separate queues for EU citizens at land borders in the EU, similar to the set-up in airports. A agreement on conclusions was reached at the SCIFA working group on borders, which is likely to be confirmed by COREPER and then by the Council. The document invites Member States to carry out border controls in separate queues in order to avoid long delays for EU citizens. The draft conclusions, general and non-binding, stress that this decision remains in the hands of the Member State in question and can be adapted to meet local circumstances, including traffic density at specific crossings. The issue of separate queues is expected to be included in a manual of good practice for managing the EU's external borders. Important detail - there would not be separate queues at borders with accession countries.
