European summer school

Brussels, 28/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Academic Network for Legal Studies on Immigration and Asylum in Europe is organising a summer school on "European Union Law and Policy on Immigration and Asylum" from 1 to 11 July at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. The programme is aimed at registered students and specialised practitioners in the two fields. The Academic Network was set up with the financial support of the European Commission's Odysseus programme.

Classes will tackle the most recent developments in the field, say the organisers. The latest preparatory work by the European Commission and legislative projects from the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament are included in the teaching, thanks to the participation of high-level EU civil servants as speakers. The classes are divided as follows: 1) general courses: migration flow, free movement of persons, institutional framework, control of external borders, visa policy, enlargement; 2) asylum: definition of refugee, subsidiary protection, distribution between Member States (Dublin), eligibility procedures, reception conditions; 3) immigration: family reunification, access to work, status of third country nationals, regularisation of illegal immigrants, Schengen, fight against illegal immigration, return.
