28/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - Nothing has changed since the 1994 trial, said Dutch Green Jan Joost Lagendijk, who headed the ad hoc European Parliament delegation that followed the new trial of Kurdish MP Leyla Zana in Ankara. In December 1994, Zana was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for helping the PKK (Kurdish Workers' Party), but a second trial was organised because the European Court of Human Rights said the first trial was unfair. Lagendijk called on President Cox to allow the delegation to be present at all the hearings, up until the verdict. He said they had been a little over-optimistic, following recent reforms passed by the Turkish government. He said they had seen that the defence had been unable to properly defend its client in this trial.
