14/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - Last week in Strasbourg, the European Parliament's European Constitution Intergroup expressed its disappointment over the draft articles presented by the European Convention Presidium concerning the democratic life of the European Union (see EUROPE of 4 April, p. 5). Essentially, they deplore that fact that the Presidium merely repeats what is said in the Charter of Fundamental Rights, while, the Intergroup calls for an 'instrument of direct democracy' alongside the instruments of representative democracy. In Particular, the Intergroup requests that EU citizens have the right to call European referendums.
