THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/north korea

24/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - On 18 February, the Greek Presidency issued the following declaration (unofficial translation): "The EU notes with satisfaction the resolution adopted by the IAEA on 12 February 2003 noting the DPRK's failure to meet its commitments, the IAEA's finding itself unable to carry out its verification role under the safeguard agreement with DPRK in the framework of the NPT and calling on the IAEA Director General to report back on this to the Security Council. The EU considers that the Security Council can make a useful contribution to the diplomatic solution of this issue in the framework of its responsibility of international peace-keeping and security. It also calls on North Korea to abstain from any new initiative likely to cause deterioration in the situation. The EU reaffirms its firm commitment to contribute to finding a peaceful solution. Acting in close cooperation with all the countries concerned, it is planning to send a high level delegation to Pyongyang, when conditions are favourable, in order to encourage settlement of the current problem."
