Turkey would agree to the date for starting negotiations only being set in 2003 as long as negotiations begin in spring 2004

Brussels, 09/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the External Relations Council on Tuesday the EU will try to reach agreement on the response to be given to Turkey in Copenhagen, but it seems unlikely that they will reach agreement before the summit. The Turkish Foreign Minister, Yaser Yakis, said on Monday that his country was prepared to agree to the date for launching the negotiations not being set until 2003, as long as the negotiations begin in spring 2004.
