Candidates stress importance of European ombudsman's role and welcome progress made by Mr Söderman

Brussels, 29/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - During the Petitions Hearings Committee of the European Parliament, seven candidates for the post of European Ombudsman highlighted the importance of the job for which they are applying and how it was important to European democracy. The former Vice President of the EP, Giorgios Anastassopoulos, has made himself known by his criticism of the current Ombudsman, whom he has attacked for not having sufficiently raised the profile of the institution.
