Brussels, 16/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Association of European Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Eurochambres) welcomed the very positive analysis of the situation in the ten accession candidate countries, which was presented last Wednesday by the European Commission. Such an analysis should not, however, conceal any obstacles to enlargement. In a press statement, Eurochambres stressed that, "For this historical process to become a success story and to fulfil its real potential, a series of critical actions still have to be taken". The President of the Association, Christoph Leitl therefore insisted on the fact that, "EU countries too have to consider their own adjustment" and not only candidate countries. "Technical, financial and institutional reforms apply to both sides and EU countries must take action now", he added. Eurochambres also urged decision-makers to tackle the issue of enlargement in a more positive way and that the Communication on the subject of enlargement had to be considerably improved with the governments better explaining what is at stake to their citizens, as well as the benefits that would offset the costs.
