Mr Cohn-Bendit attacks president Chirac's Johannesburg speech

Strasbourg, 03/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - During a press conference in a backdrop to the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg, Co-president of the Greens/EFA groups, Daniel Cohn Bendit described the speech by French President Chirac during the Johannesburg Summit as "philosophically chronic" and condemned the speech that portrayed France as the model of sustainable development, without mentioning any figures. "There is nothing about agricultural subsidies", he pointed out, indicating that, "France was the country blocking CAP reform". Mr Cohn-Bendit also spoke about Iraq. "There is currently nothing that justifies military intervention, he asserted and appealed for maximum pressure and the isolating of Iraq in order to gain access for UN inspectors to the country. On the subject of the International Criminal Court, Mr Cohn Bendit reaffirmed the need to reject the bilateral agreements requested by the USA. "It is not worth making international conventions if they are undermined by bilateral agreements", he said before adding that it was necessary to "oppose the intentions of Berlusconi, Blair and others".
