Brussels, 03/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - At a press conference on the margins of the EP plenary session in Strasbourg, the President of the Socialist group, Spanish MEP Enrique Baron, noted that Romano Prodi had launched a reflection process on renewing the Commission against the backdrop of enlargement (see Europe of 30 August, p.7 on the Commission President's information note on the option of the current Commission's mandate finishing a few months early). Emphasising that legitimacy was conferred by elections, Baron said that Prodi should present his ideas to Parliament so MEPs could decide on their position. On Prodi's potential return to the political scene in Italy, Baron said that a responsible person like Romano Prodi would no doubt be useful in Italy, but it was for the Italians to decide for themselves.
