Brussels, 26/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission did not adopt, as expected, the Communication by Frits Bolkestein on the gradual suppression of the tax on private car registration and the setting up of a refund system for this tax in Member States. The Cabinet of Neil Kinnock appears opposed to the adoption o this proposal by written procedure. The decision has therefore been postponed. As indicated in EUROPE 25 July p 10, the draft communication proposed a series of recommendations to get rid of the double tax imposition. It particularly called for the gradual lifting of the registration tax applied in 10 Member States and to transfer the revenue to an annual road tax.
