Brussels, 27/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the Commission decided to take action against Spain at the Court of Justice for having imposed restrictions on the free provision of maritime transport services in the Vigo estuary, in Galicia. It considers such measures run counter to the national regulation on maritime cabotage as: 1) it gives preference to the operator on site allowing maritime transport services to be granted to a single operator during twenty years and using experience gained in the estuary as a criterion for selection; 2) it makes seasonal transport services with the islands and regular transport services between continental ports subject to public service obligations, whereas the national regulations stipulate that only regular services with island ports as their destination may be subject to such obligations.
