Luxembourg, 27/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the Environment Council was briefed by the Spanish Presidency on measures taken in order to improve internal procedures within the Council concerning the environmental aspects of the sustainable development strategy (SDS). The Presidency mainly suggested creating a new SDS sub-sector within the Environment Group of the Council and enlarging the mandate of the "environment and development" sub-sector of the International Environment Group whose name would be changed in consequence. In conformity with the wishes expressed by the delegations, the horizontal aspects of SDS will be examined by the Committee of Permanent Representatives in the light of the conclusions of the European Council of Seville on 21 and 22 June concerning the organisation and the working of the Union Council.
