Brussels, 27/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - On 26 June, the Spanish Presidency made the following declaration on behalf of the EU: "The EU reiterates its support for the conclusion of a lasting peace which takes into account the aspirations of all communities in Sri Lanka and does not undermine the principles of territorial integrity and the unity of Sri Lanka. The EU urges the full implementation of the cease-fire agreement by the two parties and calls on both sides to agree an early date for talks. The EU invites the LTTE to renounce terrorism and all forms of violence completely and urges all parties to respect the principles of pluralism and Human Rights. The EU notes the important role played by Norway and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) and calls on the parties to actively co-operate with the SLMM on the national as well as district level in the efforts to monitor the cease-fire agreement. The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the EU, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and Iceland and Liechtenstein countries members of the EEA, align themselves with this declaration."
