Eurosceptics denounce debate among friends

Brussels, 25/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - At a press conference with the Danish President of the EDD Group, Jens-Peter Bonde, the arch Eurosceptics in the European Parliament said that the session devoted to listening to civil society, far from having allowed for the expression of all opinions, had been reduced to a propaganda debate in favour of European federalism. Renaming the session "Brussels talking to Brussels", the British Conservative David Heathcoat-Amory explained that the speakers essentially represented organisations subsidised by Community funds. Five of these organisations are said to have received 6.7 million euro, he said, considering that the debate could not be democratic under those conditions. France's William Abitbol qualified the speakers as "Commission poodles" and deplored the fact that the debate should only provided a "federalist vulgate", whereas at least a quarter of Europeans do not share this type of opinion. In answer to the question by a journalist, they did, however, acknowledge that they had no wind of the fact that anyone may have been prevented from speaking.
