Another meeting of the two permanent councils

Brussels, 25/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - Another joint meeting at Ambassador level of the Political and Security Committee (COPS) of the European Commission and NATO's North Atlantic Council (CAN) took place on Tuesday. It was followed by a press conference with the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) High Representative, Javier Solana, NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson and COPS Acting President, Spanish Ambassador, Carlos Casajuana during the afternoon at the Union Council Head Quarters. Discussions included the war on terrorism, the Balkans situation, and EU-NATO relations. There was also an exchange of information on the large Ministerial meeting recently held between the two institutions, as well as the European Council of Seville. During the meeting, which came to an end as we were going to press, discussions were expected on a tighter and more practical co-operation programme over terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, including prevention of attacks or reactions to these attacks with such weapons. According to certain sources, NATO can bring an important contribution to this area with its "expertise and unique capabilities".
