Council adopts common position on maintaining airline company slots during summer and winter seasons 2002/3

Brussels, 02/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Last week the Council approved a common position on the regulation which will allow airlines to keep certain timetabling arrangements that they have been using since 11 September 2001, during the summer 2002 and winter 2002-2003 seasons. This decision was proposed by the European Commission to deal with the difficulties in the sector following the attacks on 11 September. The Council did not accept the amendment by the European Parliament in the co-decision procedure that outlines that airlines that benefit from these rights must formally use the timetabling arrangements at the end of the two seasons. If such a commitment is not taken by 31 August at the latest, the slots will be made available to other Member States. The EP is calling on fines to be imposed on those countries not abiding by the arrangement.
