Brussels, 02/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - "The EU is concerned to learn of the postponement of the planned visit by the United Nations Secretary General's Special Envoy to Burma, Tan Sri Razali Ismail. The EU is surprised to receive this news so soon after the Troika's own visit to Burma/Myanmar on 13-16 March. The EU believes that, for the momentum and confidence to be maintained in the evolving political process in Burma/Myanmar, it is essential that Sri Razali Ismail's planned visit be reinstated immediately. The European Union remains ready to respond proportionately to events in Burma/Myanmar and calls upon the authorities to allow further, faster progress towards national reconciliation, respect for human rights and democracy in Burma. It believes that a visit by Tan Sri Razali during the month of April 2002 will offer the best prospect of bringing this about. The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and Liechtenstein and Norway, EFTA countries members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration".
