Vote on Resolution in April or May

Strasbourg, 13/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - At Monday's plenary, Olivier Dupuis, MEP from the Lista Bonino, asked for the Parliament to hold an emergency debate on Chechnya but the President of the EPP-DE, Hand-Gert Pöttering (who often raises the question: Editor's note) believed that it would be more opportune to have a full debate, together with Commission and Council declaration followed by a vote on a Resolution that would be representative of Parliament's position. The plenary accepted this proposal, with the debate taking place in April, before the visit of the EP delegation to Russia goes to Moscow or in May after the visit. Addressing a press conference, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, condemned the "tacit agreement" of the EPP-DE and Socialist group on the issue, asserting that Mr Pöttering had been marginalised by his won group. Mr Pöttering reply appealed for a more coherent Parliament position on the issue, "that should always be on Parliament's agenda". The President of the Socialist group, Enrique Baron, at the same time, also criticised the way in which emergency debates are currently organised (he pointed out that the Corbett report on amending the EP regulation also stated this as well).
