Support for territorial integrity

Brussels, 13/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Spanish Presidency on behalf to the European Union made the following declaration, "The European Union reiterates its full support for the territorial integrity of Georgia and emphasises that it does not recognise the legitimacy of the so-called "parliamentary elections" held in Abkhazia, Georgia, on 2 March 2002. The EU considers that no elections can be held in this region of Georgia until all refugees and internally displaced persons are given the right to safe, secure and dignified return to their homes. Such "elections" seek to sanction unacceptable demographic changes resulting from the armed hostilities in 1992-1993 and in 1998. The EU urges the concerned parties to resume negotiations in conformity with Resolution 1393, adopted on 31 January 2002 by the Security Council of the United Nations."
