Brussels, 13/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission considered on Tuesday that the aid scheme granted by Spain to its milk producers in the region of Asturia (to enable them to buy milk quotas) was an infringement of Community legislation on State aid. Spain will have to take all measures necessary to comply with this final negative Commission decision within two months. It will, notably, have to ensure that this aid scheme of over 240,000 euro, in force since 31 December 1998, is refunded. The Commission decided that this aid scheme contravened the provisions of the regulations of the common market organisation for milk and dairy products, which prohibit the granting of aid for the purchase of quotas between farmers. The Commission initiated a formal examination procedure in 2001.
