Brussels, 13/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - In order for the European Council to keep on the strategic track fixed in Lisbon, a new cycle of substantial investment is necessary, geared in particular to environment-friendly, innovative technologies that contribute to creating the right conditions for sustainable development, states the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) in a resolution adopted by its executive committee on 12 March in Brussels, to the attention of the European Council of Barcelona. In addition to the warnings given by Secretary General Emilio Gabaglio (see EUROPE of 8 March, p.17), ETUC: - remains convinced that it is only by keeping the Lisbon strategy balanced and integrated that one can allow Europe to reach its growth potential, that is, the potential for Europe to reach the objective of most competitive and innovative economy for generating full employment and greater social cohesion; - is opposed to flexibility that is synonymous to precariousness, especially for women and young people; - and considers that lifelong learning must be an element in the development of stable, quality jobs.
