Brussels, 06/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has authorised the takeover of the German company, Berliner Kraft- und Licht Aktiengesellschaft (Bewag), by the Swedish group Vattenfall. The move will allow the latter to acquire full control of Bewag. Mainly present in the Scandinavian countries, Germany and Poland, Vattenfall is active in the production, distribution and marketing of electricity as well as in the production of heat and the provision of energy solutions. Bewag is also active in the production, distribution and marketing of electricity in Germany. The Commission's review has demonstrated that the activities of both parties overlap mainly in Germany where Vattenfall has a foothold via the intermediary of Hamburgische Electricitätswerke (HEW) and Vereinigte Energiewerke (Veag). The combined market share is well below 10% for electricity supply to low consumption customers, whereas the new entity will face strong competition from the other large German electricity utilities for supplying high energy intensive customers. The Commission does not, therefore, raise any objection to the takeover.
