Brussels, 06/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Community embargo on certain live animals subject to foot-and-mouth from Great Britain will be definitively lifted in the coming days. This is what the representatives of Member States decided, meeting within the Union's Standing Veterinary Committee (SVC). By approving the Commission's proposal on Tuesday aimed at putting an end to the last safeguard measures applicable to the export of live sheep and goats, the veterinary experts recognised that the United Kingdom had managed to eradicate the disease from its territory. To be able to be exported to other Member States, sheep and goats will however have to have been first isolated for 30 days. The effective lifting of the safeguard measures will come just as soon as the Commission has formally adopted the decision endorsed by the SVC.
