Spanish Presidency wants to include combating terrorism in Esdp tasks

Madrid, 01/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Spanish Presidency wants to initiate the debate on combating terrorism among the tasks of the European Security and Defence Policy, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Piqué confirmed to some journalists on Thursday. "Combating terrorism is part of the third pillar, and of the creation of a European area of security, freedom and justice. But there is also another obvious aspect, which is the threat to European security that terrorism represents, and which must be included in the second pillar and in the European Security and Defence Policy (…), as was said at the Extraordinary Summit following 11 September", stressed Josep Piqué, when meeting the press. "How to implement that principle? This demands a debate", he continued, stating that, for Spain, "a Council declaration on the subject would be very important". "The aim is to have the concept accepted", then we shall have to give it the time European construction takes to develop the practical modalities of the concept, like, for example, co-operation between military intelligence services in combating terrorism, the Council President stipulated.
