Brussels, 23/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has authorised acquisition of the Anglo-Norwegian firm Kvaerner by the Norwegian group Aker Maritime; in the shipbuilding sector. It considers that the move would not have an adverse impact on this sector, but it has referred the part of the dossier concerning the transaction's impact in the oil and gas sectors to the Norwegian authorities for examination. As notified on 14 December, the project provides for the acquisition of exclusive control of Kvaerner by Aker Maritime in the aim of merging the oil and gas activities of both companies within a new undertaking called Kvaerner Oil & Gas. The Norwegian authorities requested permission of the Commission, under the EEA Agreement, to examine the impact that the operation would have on the oil and gas sectors, arguing that competition issues related mainly to Norway.
