Strasbourg, 17/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - Following the recommendation of the Chairman of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, German Social Democrat Christa Randzio-Plath, the European Parliament refused, on Wednesday, to give its position according to emergency procedure on amendment of Directive 92/80 and Directive 95/59 concerning the structure and the rate of excise applicable to manufactured tobacco. The Katiforis report adopted by Parliament (see EUROPE of 16 November, p.14) rejected the proposal. The economic and monetary affairs committee plans to present a new report in the hope of reaching an acceptable compromise by February, so that the Finance Ministers may examine it during their February session. Ms Randzio-Plath said she had written to the Spanish presidency in this connection.
