Strasbourg, 17/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, Scottish Conservative John Corrie, co-President of the ACP/EU Assembly, called on the new President of the European Parliament to write to the President of Nigeria to request that Islamic sharia law not be applied with regard to women who commit adultery. The Nigerian courts decided to postpone until 18 March 2002 their ruling on the sentence of death by stoning of Safiya Husaini (Nicole Fontaine has sent the Nigerian President a letter calling for the verdict to be repealed, see EUROPE of 12 January, p.4) but Mr Corrie pointed out that a new case, concerning an 18-year old, had recently come to light.
