No to pricing of water resources

Strasbourg, 16/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - Having adopted several amendments from the EPP-ED and Liberal groups, the European Parliament finally rejected - by 89 in favour, 187 against and 141 abstentions - the resolution tabled by Marialiese Flemming (Austrian, OVP) on the European Commission's communication relating to the pricing and sustainable management of water resources (see EUROPE of 8 November, p.14). When voting on the report in Committee, a majority of the Environment Committee managed to introduce a paragraph in the resolution expressing Parliament's deep concern for the Spanish national hydrological plan. Thursday, plenary rejected an amendment by the EPP-ED (to which Ms. Flemming belongs) and Liberal groups aimed at abolishing this criticism of the policy of the Aznar Government, and Marialiese Flemming announced that, under those conditions, her group was in no position to approve the text as a whole. Without the support of the largest group in Parliament, the resolution fell flat.
