16/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Emilio Gabaglio, expressed deep regret, in a press release, that the Doha talks had not resulted in any major concrete move forward towards respect of the fundamental labour norms. Mr Gabaglio went on to say that he feared this failure would "undermine still further popular support for the trading system open and towards the WTO itself". As for the immediate follow-up to Doha, he pointed out that the "strict minimum that ETUC could accept would be for the WTO to agree to play an active role in the world commission on the social dimensions of globalisation that the ILO is on the point of creating".
