EP calls on Member States to assume additional costs stemming from terrorist risks

Strasbourg, 16/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - Following its Thursday morning's debate on the crisis in the air transport sector worsened by the 11 September terrorist attacks (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.11), the European Parliament adopted a resolution tabled by the EPP-ED, Socialist, Liberal, United Left/EFA and the Union for a Europe of Nations groups, in which it considers in particular that airline companies need totally compensating for the injury suffered by the closure of the American air space following these attacks. Parliament also calls on the Commission to make proposals strengthening the position of the European airline industry faced with massive aid granted by the American Government to national companies, and to check whether the $15 billion is compatible with international rules of trade. The EP, for which this sector should benefit as far as possible from an equivalent treatment as its Americans counterpart, also calls on the Commission to implement, "during the consolidation process of the European air carriers, European competition rules on an individual basis, so that new structures may be put in place", as well as to closely monitor developments on the labour market in the sector so as, if necessary, to be able to present proposals to preserve or create jobs. Finally, by adopting an oral amendment by British Conservative Jacqueline Foster, Parliament calls on the governments of Member States to assume the additional costs stemming from measures taken in air transport following the 11 September attacks.
