Special sitting on international terrorism - Seminar on defence and public opinion

Brussels / Paris, 18/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Standing Committee of the Western European Union - European Interim Assembly on Security and Defence (a Committee that meets to discuss current themes outside the two annual Assembly sessions) had met on 18 October in Brussels to adopt a report on "Security in Europe in the face of international terrorism". We shall come back to this meeting, during which the members of the WEU Assembly also defined their response to the proposal made by President of the Belgian Senate Armand De Decker (who was a member of the WEU Assembly and Chairman of its Defence Committee), to create an ad hoc assembly allowing national parliaments of the EU countries and the European Parliament to address recommendations on ESDP to the European Council.

Furthermore, the Assembly is organising a colloquium in Paris on 5 November, with EuroDefence (an international network created in 1994 bringing together eight national associations) on "Building Defence Europe with the support of public opinion", which should be inaugurated by French Defence Minister Alain Richard. Work will then take the form of a round table chaired by Mr De Decker. Participants will notably include Romanian Defence Minister Mr Pascu, former Swedish Defence Minister Mr Björk, former WEU Assembly President Mr de Puig and the President of EuroDefence Italy, Mr Capuzzo. The conclusions will be drawn by Josette Durrieux, member of the French Senate and WEU Assembly.
