Brussels, 18/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has approved the planned takeover of Marconi's medical imaging equipment division (MMS) by the multinational Philips Electronics NV, based in the Netherlands and specialised in consumer electronic products. The Commission noted there was an overlap of activities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, nuclear medicine (NM) systems and computed tomography (CT) systems. Nonetheless, the new entity created from the concentration will remain confronted by serious competitors such as the American company General Electric, German company Siemens and Toshiba and Hitachi from Japan. Also, the sectors affected by the operation are dynamic markets stimulated by innovation.
