Brussels, 08/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - Graham Watson, Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Citizens' Freedoms and Rights, considered that Parliament and the Commission should "consider recourse to the Court of Justice" following the General Affairs Council's decision not to adopt a regulation proposed by the Commission on freezing the assets of people or entities linked to the terrorist attacks against the United States (see above and EUROPE of 5 October, p.12). In a press release, Mr. Watson castigates the Council which, he says, "once again", demonstrated that "it prefers secrecy and intergovernmentalism in the fight against crime rather than Community instruments which allow democratic and judicial control at EU level". The MEP accuses Member States of choosing "cumbersome decision-making procedures based on an outdated concept of national sovereignty".
