Strasbourg, 08/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution on East Timor, the European Parliament calls for the adoption of a Constitution that embodies the values of freedom and democracy. It also invites the international community to contribute to the consolidation of democracy and to economic development in this country. If East Timor were to express its wish to join the ACP group, then the Commission would back its candidature, and a request from this country to join ASEAN would be considered in a positive light, states the Parliament. At the political level, the EP hopes to send a mission of European monitors to the presidential elections of 2002. A monitoring mission will be effectively present at the elections (probably in May 2002). The Constitution should be adopted before this date, specified Commissioner Poul Nielson, identifying two areas in which the Commission can help East Timor - rural development and the establishment of local administrations.
