Strasbourg, 08/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - In an emergency resolution, the Parliament called on the FARC guerrilla force in Colombia to release the citizens it is holding (reiterating the request made by the EP during its visit to Colombia in June) and to put an end to the systematic violation of human rights. Council, Commission and Member States are invited to closely follow the situation in Colombia and to propose their mediation between the parties in order to reach a lasting peace agreement. The combat against drugs trafficking, added the Parliament, cannot be reduced to military action alone. It also requires social and economic measures adopted in consultation with the civilian population, the countries of destination and the consumers. Commissioner Poul Nielson made it clear that, in addition to the 10 million allocated to Colombia this year through ECHO, the Commission is finalising the project for a "laboratory of peace" in Colombia. He said he hoped it would soon materialise.
