Brussels, 08/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - Nicole Fontaine, President of the European Parliament, has written to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to recall that several MEPs had taken the floor in plenary concerning his "recent remarks on Islam and its relations with the western society" (see EUROPE of 3 October, p.4). Ms Fontaine writes: "I know you have clarified your remarks" but "given the very great sensitivity of our Parliament concerning relations with the Arab and Muslim world at this dramatic time in our history, I have been invited to convey to you my most recent declarations to you (…) in which, on behalf of our Institution, I have refused all confusion between Islam and terrorism and have urged for constructive dialogue between our civilisations".
