Brussels, 08/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, at the Palazzo Papadopoli in Venice, the European Commission is to present three research projects aimed at improving the protection of cultural heritage. The ISTECH project covers a technique using an alloy of nickel and titanium for strengthening the structure of monuments. Used for ensuring better stability of the Assisi basilica against seismic movement, the alloy had been originally developed for use in the aerospace and medical (dentistry) sectors. SAVE ART is a technology for preserving books, textiles and other antiques through the suppression of oxygen. This innovative method allows such objects to be preserved and above all protects against damage by insects, without any adverse environmental effects. The ARCHEO project made it possible to assess the effect of climate change in Venice before the 20th century. It is based on an analysis of paintings by the Italian artist, Canaletto.
