Barnier stresses political dimension of cohesion one of the safest Union values, and recognises with Annemie Neyts that less advantaged regions of current EU should be treated even-handedly

Brussels, 20/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - EU Council President Annemie Neyts and Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for Regional Policy and Cohesion, both acknowledged before MEPs during the the Wednesday afternoon plenary debate on the future of cohesion policy that, after the next EU enlargement, it will be necessary to treat the regions in difficulty within the EU Fifteen in an even-handed manner.
