National and regional EU Ombudsmen meet

Brussels, 17/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Ombudsman and the Belgian parliamentary ombudsmen are organising, for 20 and 21 September in the Charlemagne building in Brussels, a meeting of all national and regional ombudsmen of the European Union. They will discuss: "Ombudsmen against discrimination". Opened by the Belgian Minister for Home Affairs, Antoine Duquesne, and Commissioner Loyola de Palacio, the meeting will allow the ombudsmen to discuss: - The Charter of Fundamental Rights; - the principle of non-discrimination; - the Community directives on non-discrimination; - the Ombudsman and prisons; - the Ombudsman and foreigners' rights; - transparency and data protection; - relations between Community law and regional law; - human rights; - and economic and social rights. European Ombudsman Jacob Söderman will close the work.
