17/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - MEPs on the Lista Bonino, who favour full scientific freedom within the European Union, are convinced of the incommensurable benefits that may accrue from embryonic stem cell research and therapeutic cloning for treating several diseases. With this in mind, they are organising a conference in the EP's buildings in Brussels on 18/19 September entitled "Stem cells - for research freedom in Europe". Octavi Quintana Trias, a member of the European Ethics Group, Robert Goebbels (PES, Luxembourg and President of the Temporary Human Genetics Committee), and the rapporteur of the said Temporary Human Genetics Committee, Francesco Fiori (Forza Italia), along with various researchers and MEPs, will be taking part in the three broad debates being organised at the Conference, namely The perspectives for stem cell research; Against the negation of research freedom in Europe; and Scientific Research Freedom - the role of the European institutions.
