Brussels, 17/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has cleared a proposed joint venture between France's JCDecaux and Italy's Rizzoli Corriere della Sera and Publitransport in the field of outdoor advertising in Italy. The operation does not give rise to competition concerns since even with the narrowest market definition, the only area of horizontal overlap would be that of "affissioni" (billboards with a surface area of 6 x 3m) and smaller 1 x 4m panels that might be used on busses or street furniture. After the concentration, the joint venture's market share would be less than 35%, compared with other operators such as Clear Channel (market share estimated at more than 20%), Viacom (over 10%) or A&P (around 5%). There are also a number of other operators. The Commission also took into consideration the existence of low entry barriers in the market.
