Vaduz, 22/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 19 and 20 June was held in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, the 16th meeting of the joint parliamentary committee of the European Economic Area (EEA).
The committee, formed of European parliamentarians and parliamentarians from Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, welcomed the satisfactory functioning of the EEA. However, it called on the signatory parties to resolve all the pending issue in terms of the free movement of goods by the end of this year, and to tackle the integration of the veterinary acquis as quickly as possible. The parliamentarians reiterated their warning according to which the failings in the completion of the internal market within the EEA, at the time of the EU enlargement, could have serious consequences for its functioning. Finally, the joint committee favourably welcomes the participation of the EFTA countries from the EEA in the Community "comitology", feeling that this participation would facilitate the implementation of the provisions adopted by the Commission through the comitology procedure and allowing the EFTA members of the EEA to have a better understanding of the measures proposed.
