GENERAL NEWS / (eu) ep/worker information

22/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's Social Affairs Committee has adopted the report by the CDU member Winfried Menrad on the directive on worker information and consultation in European companies, directive closely linked to the regulation of the statute of the European company (for which the EP's Legal Affairs Committee will discuss the report by the CDU member Hans-peter Mayer next week). When voting on the Menrad report, which plenary will discuss in September, MEPs considered in particular that the draft directive did not provide for minimum standards whereas, for example in the case of mergers, workers must be given the possibility of negotiating their fate. The MEPs also suggest the creation of a body made up of specialists from Member States to coordinate the transposition of the directive, to avoid co-existence of different implementation provisions depending on the country.
