22/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - On arriving in Gaza, the High Representative for the CFSP, Javier Solana, called on all leaders in the region to use the opportunity provided by the publication of the Fact Finding Committee's report (the Mitchell report) to "break free from this infernal circle of violence". Together with the Jordanian-Egyptian initiative, it "offers the best chance for peace" (see details of his Middle East visit on p. 4 of yesterday's EUROPE). The External Affairs Commissioner, Chris Patten, said that the recommendations made by the Mitchell Commission report "are an excellent and balanced way forward for eliminating violence and resuming the parties' discussions. He said he was "convinced there is still sufficient good will among moderates in both parties to engage into discussions towards peace".
